Federal Releases Near Elmore
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a nationwide sentenced-prison system. It is not a physical Elmore County facility. Elmore County Jail has a documented federal relationship through a U.S. Marshals Service intergovernmental agreement, but that relationship does not turn the county jail into a BOP prison. A person may be housed locally while awaiting a federal hearing, moved by USMS, later designated to BOP, or released by federal court order. Each stage creates a different record.
BOP’s public locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. A sentenced person’s result may show a federal release date and a status such as Released or Not in BOP Custody. Those terms mean BOP no longer holds the person. They do not rule out local, state, or ICE custody, and they do not settle whether federal supervised release continues.
Start with the last known custodian. If Elmore County Jail says the departure was to USMS, do not call it a community release. If a later federal judgment imposed a BOP sentence, the locator becomes the proper prison channel. If the person remained a pretrial detainee, the federal docket and direct agency or counsel inquiry are more useful.
Search Federal Release Records
Open the official BOP Inmate Locator. An identification-number search is strongest when a BOP register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number is known. A name search can be narrowed with age, race, and sex. Compare the full result because shared names can lead to a false match.
- Choose the number search or name search.
- Enter the exact identifier or full known name.
- Use available demographic fields to narrow matches.
- Read the release date beside the location or status.
- Check the federal docket for sentence and supervision context.
The locator form and released-result terminology appear in the successful official capture:

The image supports a BOP-specific result. It does not establish that a person was released from all other custody.
Federal Locator Record Fields
BOP results provide a compact identity and custody record. Preserve the fields together rather than copying only the date. A date without status can be misunderstood, and a status without the matching register number may belong to another person.
| Field | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Name and register number | Federal identity match |
| Age, race, sex | Demographic matching aids |
| Release date | BOP’s displayed release information |
| Location or status | Current BOP facility or BOP-specific exit label |
| Released / Not in BOP Custody | No current BOP confinement, not a universal custody finding |
“Not in BOP Custody” can appear after release, but the phrase concerns BOP alone. The person could have moved to ICE, an Idaho agency, or a local jail. A federal docket may also show a term of supervised release after imprisonment. Supervised release is court-ordered monitoring in the community and is not BOP prison custody.
Federal Projected Release Date
BOP uses the exact term Projected Release Date for its public calculation. This is genuine federal terminology. The agency warns that First Step Act time-credit calculations can change the date. The displayed date should therefore be recorded with the date of the search and rechecked when release approaches.
This term must not be imported into Idaho’s IDOC search. Idaho exposes Sentence Satisfaction Date, Released to Supervision, Parole Eligibility Date, and other legally distinct fields, while no universal IDOC projected-release field was observed. The Elmore County release-date lookup separates those systems.
BOP statistics also exclude some transfers to another custodial jurisdiction from the category of releases. That distinction reinforces a key rule: leaving BOP and entering another agency’s custody is not the same as entering the community. Read the locator, docket, and receiving-agency record before stating the destination.
Elmore USMS Custody Limits
The U.S. Marshals Service generally manages a person from federal arrest through acquittal, court-ordered release, or designation to BOP. Historical federal material and the ICE inspection identify Elmore County Detention as a contract location under a USMS agreement. Yet USMS has no public historical person locator comparable to BOP’s.
For federal pretrial custody, search the federal court docket for the detention order, bond ruling, judgment, commitment, or release order. Then use the appropriate direct agency, attorney, or records channel to confirm physical custody. A signed order establishes authority. It does not supply the exact gate-exit time or eliminate another hold.
Do not search BOP for every person with a federal case. A person who never received a BOP sentence may never appear there. Likewise, a BOP no-result cannot prove that a USMS detainee left custody. Use case number, court location, and known detention history to keep the inquiry in the correct system.
Confirm Federal Release Scope
A reliable federal release check answers three questions: did BOP custody end, did the federal court impose supervision, and did another custodian take control? The BOP locator answers only the first for sentenced prisoners. The docket can answer the second. ICE ODLS, IDOC, or a local record may be needed for the third.
- Released
- A BOP exit label that does not rule out other custody.
- Transfer
- Movement to another custodian while confinement continues.
- Projected Release Date
- BOP’s calculated future release date, subject to change.
- Supervised release
- Federal court monitoring after imprisonment, distinct from BOP custody.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis that may lead to another agency taking custody.
If Elmore County Jail was the last known location, call 208-587-9103 or request the county release record to learn whether the departure went to USMS, ICE, IDOC, another jail, or the community. The Elmore County release search covers that local record path. Never let a federal result answer for the county jail or immigration system.
Note: Preserve the BOP register number, displayed date, status, and search date so the federal result can be checked later.
Federal Records And Contacts
BOP’s locator is the primary public release search for federal sentenced custody. The federal docket supplies case and supervision context. No local BOP address should be inferred because no BOP prison is documented in Elmore County. The Elmore County Jail address belongs to the Sheriff’s facility, even when it temporarily houses a federal detainee under an agreement.
When the locator appears inconsistent, use the exact register number and request clarification through official BOP channels. For USMS pretrial history, rely on the federal case record and direct inquiry. For ICE custody, use the separate ICE locator rather than asking BOP to resolve an immigration release.
A records inquiry should identify the full name, register number, known federal court case, and precise field in dispute. Ask whether the displayed date is current and whether the status reflects release or transfer. Do not request a broad file when one date or custody event is the real question. Narrow details reduce mistaken identity and make the response easier to compare with the docket.
The federal court record may show judgment, sentence length, detention rulings, and supervised release terms. It does not replace the BOP custody record. Conversely, the locator does not explain each court condition or confirm compliance after prison. Keep both records in their proper roles. If a new arrest or other sovereign’s hold appears, search that custodian rather than stretching the BOP result beyond its scope.
